Five
brothers of Father Rufus Halley came all the way from Ireland to bury
the Columban priest in Cagayan de Oro City. Known for his efforts at
inter-religious dialogue, Halley was killed while resisting a kidnapping

Barani, one of the armed men who laid siege on a commercial building in

MNLF

forces in Pasonanca on 27 November 2001. At least 300 members of the
Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) loyal to Nur Misuari, then
outgoing governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, staged a
siege at the former ARMM extension office at the Cabatangan Complex in
Zamboanga City, holding 114 persons hostage. Twenty-one persons were

American
soldiers left their military bases in the Philippines in 1991 following
the
decision of the Philippine Senate to reject extension of the US
Military Bases Agreement. In early 2002, they returned to the country
via its backdoor, Mindanao, invoking the Visiting Forces Agreement. In
this photo on 14 March 2002, American specialists ready an unmanned
aerial vehicle, or spy plane, at the Edwin Andrews Airbase in Zamboanga
City. Equipped with telephoto lenses capable of taking surveillance
pictures at night, the spy plane is helping ground forces track Abu
