Puerto Galera is best known as one of the Philippines’ major sports diving and sailing destinations, but it also offers a variety of other activities and not all of them aquatic.
The Ponderosa Golf Club is just 20 minutes out of the town proper and spectacularly perched on a mountain side over looking Puerto Galera 2,000 feet above sea level. Essentially it is a 9 hole par 3 course with attitude and a compelling experience enjoyed by both serious and fun golfers alike.
Most 9 hole par 3 courses are not really worth the effort for any serious golfer worth their salt, but Ponderosa is the exception to the rule. There may be no long drives down tree-lined fairways, but Ponderosa offers a serious challenge to any golfer’s short game with verdant jungle pushing in on all sides and sweeping panoramasover the beaches and bays of Puerto Galera, across the Verde Island Passage and the surrounding islands all the way to mountains and rim of Taal volcano on Luzon.
The greens and fairways are maintained in surprisingly good condition considering the location and environment. Clubs and very resourceful caddies are available form the Clubhouse, as well as a good selection of new and used balls – sound advice is to take more than you think you might need!
If golf is not your thing then a trip up to the Clubhouse just to sit back and enjoy the spectacular views and take a welcome respite from the summer heat and humidity down below is well worth the effort. Ponderosa is swept by cool sea breezes year-round and is also a popular destination for hikers, bird-watchers and mountain biking enthusiasts.
The clubhouse offers a selection of snacks, meals, cold drinks, alcoholic beverages and otherwise, with sunsets to die for.
