Puerto Galera is best known as one of the Philippines’ major sports diving and sailing destinations, but it also offers a variety of other activities and not all  of them aquatic.
The Ponderosa Golf Club is just 20 minutes out of the town proper and spectacularly perched on a mountain side over looking Puerto Galera  2,000 feet above sea level. Essentially it is a 9 hole par 3 course with attitude and a compelling  experience enjoyed by both serious and fun golfers alike.
Most 9 hole par 3 courses are not really worth the effort for any serious golfer worth their salt, but Ponderosa is the exception to the rule. There may be no long drives down tree-lined fairways, but Ponderosa offers a serious challenge to any golfer’s short game with verdant jungle pushing in on all sides and  sweeping panoramasover the beaches and bays of Puerto Galera, across the Verde Island Passage and the surrounding islands all the way to mountains and rim of Taal  volcano on Luzon.
The greens and fairways are maintained in surprisingly good condition considering the location and environment. Clubs and very resourceful caddies are available form the Clubhouse, as well as a good selection of new and used balls – sound advice is to take more than you think you might need!
If golf is not your thing then a trip up to the Clubhouse just to sit back and enjoy the spectacular views and take a welcome respite  from the summer heat and humidity down below is well worth the effort. Ponderosa is swept by cool sea breezes  year-round and is also a popular  destination for hikers, bird-watchers and mountain biking enthusiasts.
The clubhouse offers a selection of snacks, meals, cold drinks, alcoholic beverages and otherwise, with sunsets to die for.

Ponderosa‘s nine holes are strategically spread over a few hectares of steep mountain-side and in some places the fairways literally plunge from tee to green. Despite the fact that transportation is by your own two feet you could be forgiven for thinking that a round of golf here is more akin to a steep rollercoaster ride than the usual stroll around manicured fairways and greens.

Whether you are an occasional hacker, dedicated low handicapper or just a casual traveller looking for something a little different from ubiquitous beaches and swaying coconut palms, a round of golf at Ponderosa is an experience not to be missed.

The course is laid out in the standard three tee positions - red markers for the Ladies tees, white makers for visitors and blue for members. There is also a second tee position for each hole should players like to play a full 18 holes.

The Ponderosa Golf Course located on the side of Mt Malisimbo,, south west of Puerto Galera town behind the popular resort enclave of White Beach.

From Sabang, Small La Laguna or Big La Laguna Beach golfers have a choice of a jeepney from Sabang or renting a banca from the beach to Muelle Pier and then taking a jeepney or tricycle on to Ponderosa. The trip will take 40 to 60minutes depending on connections.

From Muelle, White Beach or any of the other popular resort beaches there abouts the trip is 15-20 minutes on good roads. The drive up to Ponderosa itself from the National highway is three kilometers and offers increasingly spectacular panoramas as you climb. The trip is worth the effort all by itself, whether you play golf or not.

You can also hire motorbikes, ATV’s or off-road buggies at most of the resort beaches. Navigation is easy and the major routes well marked.

Puerto Galera is 130 kilometers south of Manila on the island of Mindoro. It is and reached by way of interconnecting expressways to the port of Batangas and then ferry to Puerto Galera.

There are numerous inexpensive air-conditioned buses which pick-up from several points around Manila and taxis are more than happy to do the trip, at a price. Once at the port regular outrigger ferries run at hourly intervals to four entry points, Muelle, Baletero, White Beach and Sabang.

Manila to Batangas is a comfortable 90 minute journey and the boat trip an hour plus depending on the entry point.
