In 1909, Ilongot warriors murdered part-Fox Indian American anthropologist and Columbia Ph.D. William Jones. He had been on a field expedition into highland territory of the Ilongots of Nueva Vizcaya, ostensibly to study the tribe who had become notorious in the eyes of the U.S. colonial administration as savage headhunters.

The Ilongots, also known as Bugkalots, are well known for their intense aggressiveness and cultural conservatism. Their communities straddle the boundaries of Quirino, Aurora, and Nueva Vizcaya, mostly in Dupax, Kasibu, and the Sierra Madre and Caraballo mountains in the headwaters of the Cagayan, Tabayon, and Conwap Rivers.
