Itneg, Masadiit

The Masadiit Itneg reside in Sallapadan, Bucloc, and Boliney. The Masadiits are probably among earliest inhabitants of Abra. The Masadiit Itneg language has a 70% lexical similarity with Guinaang Kalinga, and has words in common with the Besao and Sagada of Mountain Province.

Itneg, Maeng

The other names of the Maeng Itnegs are Luba-Tiempo Itnegs and Southern Itnegs. The majority live in the towns of Tubo, Luba, and Villaviciosa. Theirs is the only Itneg language that is similar to Northern Kankanaey, a Mountain Province language.

Tinguian

Tinguian,” “Tinggianes,” “Tingues,” and “Tingians” all mean “mountain dwellers,” and refer to the people who, to avoid the advancing Christian Ilocano, withdrew into the Abra valley and the nearby highlands. Tinguian is used synonymously with the word “Itneg,” which is derived from “iti uneg,” which literally means “the interior,” or from the combination of the prefix “i-,” which indicates a place of origin, and the name of a major river and geographical area, “Tineg”.
