Philippine Folklore: Meet the Vampiric, Cannibalistic, Manananggal
In Philippine folklore, the Manananggal is a mythical, evil, cannibalistic, vampiric , witch that as well as sucking the blood from victims also eats them. Sometimes it is confused with the Wakwak which is a strange bird-like, vampiric creature. However, although they are both vampires unlike the Manananggal, the Wakwak cannot separate its upper body from its lower body. It is from this bizarre ability that the Manananggal gets its name.

The Manananggal and Wakwak
The subject of countless movies here in the Philippines, the Manananggal and Wakwak are other types of evil creatures in the same league as the Aswang. Legend says the Manananggal is a pretty woman by day that transforms into a vicious, half bodied, viscera-eating monster by nightfall. It is said that the Manananggal will sneak out of her house near midnight to hide in the bushes, or maybe a grove of banana trees.

Encounter with the Manananggal of Camiguin Island
I am from the Philippines, I was born and raised here. I grew up hearing about the things that go bump at night. There are many mythical creatures similar to other cultures but some are only present in our mythology. The “Manananggal” for example is said to be a beautiful maiden at day and turns into a half bodied monster at night. I heard stories about the “Manananggal” since the day I learned to understand our language. One story, told by my grandfather, still haunts me until this day.
