Ati – the Original Tribal People of Panay

he island of Boracay in central Philippines is home to the Ati people, whose ancestors were believed to have arrived through a land bridge from Borneo thousands of years ago and were thus the first inhabitants of the country. Most of the Ati can be found in Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Iloilo, and Negros. They are part of the Negrito group and are genetically related to other Negritos, such as the Mamanwa of Mindanao, Ayta of Luzon, and the Batak of Palawan.

Sulod

The Sulod are the most populous of the varied cultural-linguistic groups inhabiting the mountains of Central Panay; Tapaz, Capiz; Lambuano, Iloilo; and Valderrama, Antique Provinces, who remain relatively unassimilated. They occupy the rugged finger-like slopes along the banks of the river in the interior and higher mountains.

Kinaray-A

The Kinaray-a inhabit the coastal areas and riversides of western Panay, and interior of Panay island in the Western Visayas Region; and certain villages in Mindanao. They are concentrated in the provinces of Antique and Iloilo. Hiligaynon, the language of the Ilonggos, was derived from the Kinaray-a language.

Ilonggo

The Ilonggos are concentrated in the Western Visayas Region, particularly in Panay Island (Iloilo, Capiz, etc.) and Negros Occidental. They are also found in some areas of Mindanao. The word “Ilonggo” normally refers to a person, whose language is Hiligaynon. The term Hiligaynon originated from Yligueynes, which means “people of the coast.”

Capiznon

Capiznon is derived from kapis, the name of the seashells that are primarily used as square panes for windows; the suffix “-non”, on the other hand, means “people”. They are also known as Capizeños or Capiceños. Moreover, they're concentrated in Capiz, a province in the northeastern portion of Panay Island (Western Visayas region).

Aklanon

The province of Aklan in the northern part of Panay Island (Western Visayas Region) is home to the Aklanons. They speak Akeanon and Ibayjanon, languages that are mutually intelligible with Hiligaynon.

Aklan River

Aklan River is the longest river in the province of Aklan, Philippines and the third longest river in Panay Island, with a total length of 71 km. ( 44 mi ), only Panay River in Capiz and Jalaur River in Iloilo has longer. Aklan River drainage basin is the third largest in Panay. The river source started in the Central Panay Mountain Range on Mount Baloy in western portion of Capiz on Tapaz area, and the river travel toward north from Tapaz to the mountainous western portion of Jamindan, Capiz.

Jalaur River

Jalaur River, also known as Jalaud River, is the second longest river in Panay island and the second largest by drainage basin, only Panay River in Capiz has the longest and the largest river system in Panay. Jalaur river ranked 17th largest river system in the Philippines in terms of drainage basin size. It has an estimated drainage area of 1,503 square kilometers ( 580 square miles ) and travels 123 kilometers ( 76 miles ) from its source to its mouth in the Guimaras Strait.
