No doubt, Siargao Island has a reputation when it comes to surfing. But admit it, the intimidating waves sometimes only allow professional surfers to enjoy. Cloud 9 wasn’t coined if not for the thick waves and hollow tubes that can go as high as nine-foot. However, I didn’t find myself riding a board and doing the Shaka sign on my visit on one of the easternmost islands of the Philippines.

Siquijor is a small island in Visayas. Siquijor Island or Isla del Fuego as the Spanish named it, due to the intensity of fire flies lies some 22 km east of Southern Negros. Legend has it that Siquijor rose from the sea during a tremendous thunder storm sited as evidence is fossils and shells which can still be found in Mount Bandila-an, Siquijor's highest point. While the coastline is mostly white sand beaches, oceans full of tropical marine life the interiour is mountainous.

Cebu Island is long and narrow with a mountainous central spine and the most important island in the Visayas region of the Philippines. The main touristic areas are the islands of Mactan, Bantayan, Badian, Malapascua and Camotes where you can find large high-end resorts and hotels offering all kinds of luxury. Apart from that there are smaller resorts in fishing villages in the South and North, such as Moalboal, offering a more Filipino experience and amazing nature experiences.

Say “beautiful beach,” and chances are people will think Boracay. The way the vastly popular island hogs all tourism articles, ads and promotions, one would think it was the only game in town. It is, if you’re looking for an island party place. But if you’re after indulging your senses and clearing your mind and just having a good old-fashioned nature trip, there are hundreds of other options. Maybe more.
