This year marks 25 years of perhaps the most exhilarating performances by an iconic group in San Francisco’s Filipino American community. LIKHA Pilipino Folk Ensemble has been an envoy for Filipino culture through dance and music since 1992 when it was founded by Rudi C. Soriano, a former dance soloist with the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company.

Martial dances pertain to war, combat, or duel movements common to dances for men. In the context of Philippine dance, these dances symbolize manhood. It can mean community acceptance in the council of warriors as practiced in the Mangayaw of the Bontoc – an ethnic group in the Cordillera Region of Northern Luzon. The Mangayaw is a a pre-headhunting ritual performed by adult villagers where new warriors are presented to the council.

As a process of retrieving information on the ways of dancing, dance research occupies a limited sector in Philippine scholarship. By the ephemeral nature of dance, this scholarship is still to be fully oriented to understand and cope with the art and its practice. More developed methods of documentation have fairly been new, and predominantly, research still depends on verbal descriptions and pictures than on advanced forms of movement notation, filming and computer technology.

European imperial ambitions spread to the Orient. Sanctioning this, the Roman Catholic Church played umpire to disputing nations by subdividing their playing fields. By that, the Philippines should not have been Spanish territory if not for Ferdinand Magellan chancing upon it in 1521 and by Miguel Lopez Legaspi’s establishment of government in 1565. After them, the islands fell under Spanish suzerainty for more than three centuries.
