We arrived at Tabuk City, Kalinga Province, shortly before midnight after a 12-hour drive from Manila with Fe, my friend, and our hardy driver, Roniel. Fe, an ethnomusicologist, was going to collect a few more chants as part of her lifelong work in music cultures. I was on my first excursion outside Manila on a Fulbright grant, to investigate the effects of globalization on indigenous weaving and craft cultures.

The Ati are a Negrito ethnic group in the Visayas, the central portion of the Philippine archipelago. Their small numbers are principally concentrated in the islands of Boracay, Panay and Negros. They are genetically related to other Negrito ethnic groups in the Philippines such as the Aeta of Luzon, the Batak of Palawan, and the Mamanwa of Mindanao.

The dominant ethnic group in the Sulu archipelago because of their political and religious institutions, the Tausug occupy Jolo, Indanan, Siasi, and Patikul in Sulu (ARMM). There are also scattered settlements in Zamboanga del Sur and Cotabato, and all the way to Malaysia, which has an estimated Tausug population of more than 110,000.

The Tagalogs are one of the largest and most dominant ethnic groups in the country. Most Tagalogs live outside the National Capital Region, in the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Quezon, Cavite, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Tarlac, Zambales, Marinduque, Bataan, and Aurora. Significant Tagalog populations are also found in Mindoro and Palawan. The vast majority are followers of Christianity, most of whom are Roman Catholics.

Ilocanos make up the 3rd largest ethnolinguistic group in the Philippines. Large populations are found in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Cagayan, Abra, La Union, Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Benguet. There is, in fact, a diaspora of Ilocanos; they are found all over the country, as far south as Mindanao.

The Binukid ethnolinguistic group lives in Bukidnon north-central Mindanao, southern Bukidnon, northeastern Cotabato, and Agusan del Sur. The language is related to Cinamiguin and Cagayano — the first branch in the family tree of Manobo languages within the Malayo-Polynesian language category. The term “Bukidnon” is a Visayan word that means “people of the mountains.”

The Balangingi, also known Northern Sama or Northern Sinama, is an ethnolinguistic group living on the Greater Sulu Archipelago and the southern and western coastal regions of the Zamboanga peninsula in Mindanao. They are mostly found in Lutangan and Olutangga islands in Zamboanga del Sur, Basilan Island of the Sulu Archipelago, coastal areas of Zamboanga coast peninsula, and as far north as Luzon, particularly in White Beach near Subic Bay, Zambales.

The Balangao, also known as Boliwons were the early settlers of the Eastern Mountain Province in central Cordillera. Concentrations of this ethnolinguistic group are found in the towns of Barlig, Natonin, and Paracelis. According to the tribe's oral historians, the Gaddangs of Cagayan fled to the mountains in the 17th century, soon after their defeat at the hands of Spanish colonists.

The Ati, a Negrito ethnic group, are mostly found in Western and Central Visayas. Large concentrations are found in Aklan, Capiz, Antique, and Iloilo on Panay Island, and the biggest group is in Iloilo. There are also Ati populations on the islands of Guimaras and Negros (comprising Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental). Few Atis still speak their traditional language, as it has been replaced by Kinary-a, which is spoken in Antique and some parts of Iloilo.

In Southeast Asia, even as the archipelagic nature of the countries throughout the region separate the ethnic groups in the various islands, there are still similarities observed in ethnic groups even when they’re separated to the far ends of each country. For instance, the way some names are derived show features that may be seen in other neighboring countries as well.
