My first visit was in the late ‘80s, when this secret paradise was just beginning to enjoy prominence. This beautiful island in the Pacific started to gain worldwide attention when a German named Jens Peter wrote about Boracay as “Paradise on Earth” in the late ‘70s. At the time there were still very few tourists, and electric power was scarce and unreliable.

The Hidden Paradise of Daraitan

Daraitan is a barrio nestled within the Sierra Madre Mountain Range in Tanay, Rizal. It is a quiet and peaceful town in the midst of the mountain. The 3,150 people of the mountain barangay still possess the characters of a traditional barrio: carless streets, donkeys transporting cargoes, roosters as the barrio's alarm clock, wells and springs providing drinking water to the community, and organic farmland where most of the fresh produce is sourced.

Malcapuya Island: Paradise in the Summer Heat

Our boat slowly glided into the beige sand beach, past clear waters through which corals of different sizes, shapes and hues could clearly be seen. We were baking in the early afternoon heat as we disembarked and slowly made our way past the beach into a clearing and then over a small hill. Within a few minutes we were soon greeted by a long line of coconut palms just behind a long stretch of powdery white sand beach – the best we have seen so far in the whole of Coron, Palawan.

Wanderlust in Bohol Paradise

Our racing machine sounds like a roaring thunder on the highest gear dashing through lengthy and paved highway that connects Tagbilaran and its neighboring towns, all in the province of Bohol, Philippine Islands. The 8:00am sun has finally put itself clear after days of frequent rains in the island. I still sense the morning dew leftovers as I ride in next to Lloyd, going to one of the world’s natural wonders.

Exploring Iloilo's Islas De Gigantes

A boat that had gone all too soon, and an on-the-dot appointment that called for Option B. The overnight ride would’ve been a leisurely 12-hour sail from the port of Cebu straight to the arms of sofstpoken Ilonggos. It would’ve allowed this sleep-deprived to find comfort in an air-conditioned cabin. The bags tucked at the feet. Food and water a pick-me-up.

Finding Paradise in Lanao Del Norte

Lanao has been very much off the tourist radar for decades, due in large part to the region’s complicated history. Like many of its neighbors in Mindanao, Lanao continues to suffer from an image problem that has — for better or worse — kept the vast majority of travelers away. This has also meant, however, that the region has been spared the effects of the trampling hordes and thus remains a largely untouched frontier.
