Anda is a small but clean and trim town at the furthest south-east tip of Bohol. It's got the nicest beach in all of Bohol and one of the nicest in all of the Philippines with the bonus that there is a free freshwater shower. Anda is unusual in the Philippines in still having a large grassed plaza at its centre, in front of the main municipal offices in Poblacion. This plaza extends through shaded trees to merge imperceptibly into its famous white sand beach.

The province is a popular tourist destination with its beaches and resorts. The Chocolate Hills, numerous mounds of brown-coloured limestone formations, are the most popular attraction. The formations can be seen by land (climbing the highest point) or by air via ultralight air tours.

In a recent press briefing led by Lucas Nunag, chair of the Bohol provincial tourism council, and Bohol Provincial Administrator Alfonso Damalerio II, local officials have laid out the planned activities for the month-long festival. The tourism and government officials also said that, since this is the 30th edition of this festival, activities are set to be bigger, grander, and more colorful than previous events.

Our group’s kayak guide Jeremy allowed us to bask in the stillness before he pointed out the century-old mangroves that had withstood many a typhoon. He shared the names of some mangroves, including some of the species like pagatpat whose branches would light up with fireflies later that night.

Our racing machine sounds like a roaring thunder on the highest gear dashing through lengthy and paved highway that connects Tagbilaran and its neighboring towns, all in the province of Bohol, Philippine Islands. The 8:00am sun has finally put itself clear after days of frequent rains in the island. I still sense the morning dew leftovers as I ride in next to Lloyd, going to one of the world’s natural wonders.

When I decided to meet my friend Jorden for a month of Philippines backpacking adventures I had no idea what we would find amongst the 7,500 islands that make up this beautiful country. We did about one hour of research together in Kuala Lumpur and planned a rough itinerary that would begin in Cebu. In total, we planned to visit 9 locations and our budget was US$800 including all ferries, transfers, tours, activities, food, accommodation but not including flights.
