Engkanto & Anitos: Could Science Be Close to Proving They're Real?
Engkanto are environmental spirits. They are often associated with the spirits of ancestors in the Philippines. They are also characterized as spirit sorts like sirens, dark beings, diwata, and more. Belief in their existence has existed for centuries, and continues, with some, to this day. Anito is used to refer to spirits, deceased ancestors, nature-spirits nymphs and diwatas. Ancient Filipinos kept statues to represent these spirits, ask guidance and magical protection.

Many of our festivals range from the bawdy to the bizarre. One town in the country is even thinking of putting up a "suman festival." At other times, we couldn't seem to make up our minds whether this was an Ati-atihan or a Brazil Mardi Gras. Other festivals are just plain and simple bacchanalia.

During sexual intercourse the soul/spirit enters the female through the male, resulting in pregnancy. If a woman cannot conceive, shamans conduct sacrifices to see if the couple is compatible. If they are, shamans offer other sacrifices to enhance fertility.

The Mangmangkik: Tree Spirits in Ilocos Norte
In older times, Ilocanos, especially those from Ilocos Norte would sing these verses before cutting trees in the mountains. The literal translation of the bari bari is “do not feel bad my friend for we cut as we are ordered”. This is done so that spirits in the trees, the mangmangkik are not offended. If these spirits are offended, they can inflict grave illness upon the offending human.

The Batibat or Bangungot is a vengeful spirit found in Ilocano folklore. These spirits are blamed as the cause of the fatal nocturnal disease called bangungot or *SUNDS (sudden unexplained nocturnal death syndrome). A Batibat takes the form of a huge, old, fat woman that resides in trees. When these trees are cut down to make posts for a house, the home owner may find that they have inherited an unwanted guest.

The term “devata” also means devas (deva in plural form or the gods). There are many kinds of devatas: vanadevatas (forest spirits, perhaps descendants of early nature-spirit cults), gramadevata (village gods), devata of river crossings, caves, mountains, and so on.

Nangangatok, Who's Knocking at Your Door?
The Nangangatok are usually invisible spirits that are harbingers of terrible things to come. People are advised to peek through the window first when someone knocks before opening their doors or they might let the Nangangatok inside their house. Unlike the Kumakatok (“door knockers”), a group of three robed figures believed by many in the Philippines to knock on doors in the middle of the night and bring bad omens, you will never see the Nangangatok.
