“The Tree of Life” - Coconuts and Copra
The vegetation on the islands and coasts of the South Pacific is dominated by the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). All of us are familiar with the typical “Robinson Crusoe-style” desert island – a mound of golden sand with a solitary palm tree growing on it, and in fact, this is not just a picture book scenario, coconut palms really do grow on islands like that -the coconuts tolerance to the salt environment and poor sandy soil is incredible.

The Mangmangkik: Tree Spirits in Ilocos Norte
In older times, Ilocanos, especially those from Ilocos Norte would sing these verses before cutting trees in the mountains. The literal translation of the bari bari is “do not feel bad my friend for we cut as we are ordered”. This is done so that spirits in the trees, the mangmangkik are not offended. If these spirits are offended, they can inflict grave illness upon the offending human.

Talisay Nut
Some decades ago, most children of Sagay, Camiguin loved the talisay nut. I was one of those nuts, I was crazy about this specific nut! After school, I found time to go to the beach where talisay nuts would be lying all over, sun -dried and ready. One has only to crack them open!
