Tubbataha Reef: the Best Diving Destination

Tubbataha Reef is an atoll coral reef located in the Sulu Sea of the Philippines. It is a marine sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. It is nominated at the New 7 Wonders of Nature.The word tubbataha is a combination of two Samal words: tubba and taha, which together means "a long reef exposed at low tide".

Tubbataha Reef

The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park (Filipino: Bahurang Tubbataha) is a protected area of the Philippines located in the middle of the Sulu Sea. The marine and bird sanctuary consists of two huge atolls (named the North Atoll and South Atoll) and the smaller Jessie Beazley Reef covering a total area of 97,030 hectares (239,800 acres; 374.6 sq mi). It is located 150 kilometres (93 mi) southeast of Puerto Princesa City, the capital of Palawan province.

The Recovery of Tubbataha Reef

By a coral-coated wall at Tubbataha’s South Atoll, our dive team heaves against the current, fighting not to zoom off into open water where hungry hammerheads wait. Having spent two hours counting fish, Tubbataha Marine Park Rangers Seconds Conales, Manny Bundal, Jeffrey David and I are trying to retrieve two 100-meter transect lines. Forming a pulsating cloud of coloured confetti around us is an immense shoal of reef fish.

The Philippines Last Great Seabird Sanctuary

The combined stench of rotting fish and guano is incredible. Soaked and shivering, we shelter beneath a dripping grove of Argusia trees on Tubbataha’s South Islet and count birds. Chilly raindrops are the least of our concerns – more exciting things are falling from above. I wipe steaming gobs of fresh seabird guano from my hat, shoulders and writing slate then trail my partner through the dense brush.

I'm on a boat floating right over one of the richest coral reefs in the Coral Triangle - Tubbataha. The same reef that both a US naval vessel and then a Chinese fishing boat managed to plough into in 2013. Until recently, the only way to properly assess the health of a coral reef system like this one was by getting in the water. But here we are, lowering a weird looking gadget into the water and remaining conspicuously dry in the process.

The Wild Whale Shark of Tubbataha

There’s a reason that few people have heard of Tubbataha, one of the best dive destinations in the world. In my humble opininon of course. Besides its relative remoteness - out in the middle of the Sulu Sea off the coast of Palawan, the Philippines most westerly island - the dive season here lasts just three months, between April and June, when the currents and weather are at their tamest. Even then it can be pretty hairy at some sites. But if you can fit it in, you won’t be disappointed. Tubbat
